My job shadow took place at the Community Health Services in Hartford, CT. I observed Dr. Zeev Harel who is the director and head physician of the pediatric and adolescent ward at the health center. I thought this would be a very great experience for me to actually step into the medical field and explore a profession I have wanted to have for such a long time. My job shadow took place in mid-July. I met with Dr. Harel in the morning. He was a very interesting person who has many degrees very various different colleges. He was also a professor at Brown University. I followed Dr. Harel around the ward during his checkups with patients. I wasn’t able to listen to witness the interaction between patient and doctor though due to patient confidentiality. However, I really enjoyed my day and learned a lot of the health profession. Some important things I learned from Dr. Harel was that it takes a lot of schooling to be a doctor. He went to school for a long time but he did mention the specific requirements. One must need a bachelor's degree, go to medical school and then residency depending on your specific area. I wasn’t informed on Dr. Harel’s specific salary but he gave me a general estimate of $170,000 a year for a pediatrician. For a pediatrician, the time commitment isn’t too heinous. In fact they sometimes have weekends off and on weekdays it’s an 8am to 5pm shift. Besides the many things I learned from this job shadow experience, it has further showed me that I would still love to be in the medical field, especially treating children. I did notice though that I would have a more pleasant time seeing more patients. Physician's assistants and nurse practitioners have more time with patients and this experience has made think about looking into those professions specifically. However, out of all the things I have learned from this experience, the most important is that it is definitely important to seek education and the more the better.
